2022 NB Health Research Recognition Program – Mentor of the Month

HEALTH RESEARCH LEADS TO BETTER HEALTHCARE

During a given year, the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF) celebrates individual or groups of health researchers for their achievements and contributions in health research and innovation.

The mandate of the NBHRF is to promote and support all aspects of health research in the province. Over the years, we have celebrated the accomplishments of new, established, student and clinician investigators as well as research teams throughout New Brunswick. In 2022, we look to celebrate those individuals playing a critical role in building the capacity and expertise for competitive health research.  In particular, we look to recognize those who have taken a special interest in helping another person develop into a successful researcher.  We look to celebrate New Brunswick’s health research mentors.

Our definition of mentor is broader than the traditional faculty advisor or academic supervisor.  We are looking to recognize those who have helped advance the educational and personal growth of a student health researcher(s) through continuing guidance and support.

Nominations from former and/or current students are welcomed. The nominee can be any New Brunswick health researcher or individual supporting health research that currently directly mentors or previously mentored the nominator.

Once a month, from January 2022 to September 2022, one mentor will be selected from the pool of candidates to be highlighted by NBHRF.

Winners will be showcased online, on the NBHRF website, and in the monthly NBHRF eNewsletter.

Nominees can only be showcased once during the year.

A Mentor of the Year will be selected and named during the annual Health Research Week Event.

The nomination should include information that:

  • Demonstrates that students receive support and guidance from the nominee throughout their research experience including such things as on-going constructive feedback; fostering and facilitating students’ skills for problem solving, critical thinking, self-directed learning and effective communicating; creating a stimulating, motivating and supportive learning environment; demonstrating availability, attentiveness and encouragement;
  • Demonstrates a commitment to career development support by facilitating other research experiences for the student such as grant writing, presenting at conferences, publications opportunities and plans for continued research activities;
  • Demonstrates support beyond formal schooling such as helping a student optimize an educational experience, assisting the student’s socialization into a disciplinary culture, or helping the student find suitable employment;
  • Indicates that the mentor acts as a role model in the discipline by sharing experiences that will influence students’ experience and future career;
  • Demonstrates continuous, long-term commitment to students by his/her own contributions to the creation of knowledge, ideas and practices; and
  • Demonstrates that mentoring is a personal, as well as, professional relationship.
